Located on the Florida coast 40 minutes directly East of Orlando, the Space Coast is, for the most part, Brevard County. The nickname came about starting in the Late 1950’s with the start-up of NASA and the Kennedy Space Center (formerly Cape Kennedy).
Over the last 60+ years, the area has seen the thrill of many rocket and Space Shuttle launches as well as the agony of lost spacecraft and heroes. A rocket launch viewed up close is one of the most exciting things you will ever experience. Even though the Space Shuttle program has ended, there are plenty of other rocket launches including Delta, Titan, and SpaceX. Several much larger and more powerful rockets are in development and will launch in the very near future. Brevard County even has the very fitting telephone prefix of 321.
The Space Coast is a lot more than rocket launches. It is hard to be bored with two major rivers (fishing/Boating/Kayaking galore), The KSC Visitors Center, Port Canaveral (the world’s second busiest cruise port), more than 25 golf courses, a 75-acre zoo, and 72 miles of beaches! Other attractions include the the Space Coast Ballet, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, King Center for the Performing Arts, and several quality museums. About the only thing we don’t do here is snow ski! Thirteen major movies and three television series were filmed in Brevard County.
Geographically, Brevard County has a mainland, a large island, and a long, narrow barrier island. The primary cities in the area include: On the mainland – Titusville, Cocoa, Rockledge, Melbourne, West Melbourne, Suntree/ Viera, Palm Bay, Malabar, and Grant-Valkaria. Merritt Island – Entirely unincorporated but well-populated. Barrier Island – City Of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Patrick Air Force Base, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, Melbourne Beach.
